Cooperative Care:

How to Gain Your Dog's Cooperation
With Laura Monaco Torelli

WHO IS OUR GUEST?

Laura Monaco Torelli has been working in animal training since 1991, with extensive experience training a variety of species, including dolphins, penguins, big cats, birds, giraffes, kangaroos, and, of course, dogs! She is involved in training professionals at the world’s largest training academy, the Karen Pryor Academy for Animal Training & Behavior, and also serves as an assistant instructor to Dr. Susan G. Friedman in the Living & Learning with Animals program.

In addition to her vast experience in training and education, Laura has participated in leading industry conferences and events, such as Clicker Expo and the Aggression in Dogs Conference, led by Michael Shikashio. She has also conducted seminars in multiple countries beyond the United States, including Italy, Sweden, England, Singapore, Japan, and the Caribbean.

One of Laura’s specialties is cooperative care training for low-stress handling across various species. She has contributed to this field through the Fear Free Professional Trainer Certification program and the Karen Pryor Academy Better Vet Visits course.

What is Cooperative Care?⬇️

At some point in their lives, all animals will need to undergo a procedure—whether it’s something simple like nail trimming and tooth brushing or more complex procedures like imaging exams. Unfortunately, for many animals, especially dogs and cats, these experiences are often associated with restraint and distress. But does it really have to be this way?

You may have heard of veterinary clinics that aim to provide low-stress handling or even obtain Fear Free certification, which are still rare in Brazil. A key aspect of these approaches is creating a more collaborative experience for the animal, reducing restraint, minimizing stress, and increasing cooperation during procedures.

When we talk about cooperative care, we believe it is the necessary path to a true positive revolution. Teaching a dog that they can say "yes" or "no" to a procedure might seem like a dream, but with proper training, it is absolutely possible—and it is already yielding impressive results in Brazil, both in controlled environments and real-life situations.

This is why we have invited Laura Monaco Torelli, the world’s leading expert in this field, to join us exclusively—Brazilian trainers—to show us how we can achieve better results in this critical area for our students, whether they are puppies, adults, or seniors.
